What are the benefits of having home security cameras?

Having visible security cameras can help deter criminals and keep your family, pets and home safe. Here, we look at 5 key benefits of home security systems.

Home security cameras, also known as home CCTV systems, can:

1. Give you peace of mind

Most home security cameras are motion-activated and will record when they detect motion, as well as send you an alert. Some cameras will record footage 24 hours a day.

Having a security camera can act as an extra pair of eyes – giving you the peace of mind that comes with knowing your home is being watched over.

Some home security cameras also allow homeowners to monitor their home remotely at any time, regardless of their location. So, when you’re at work or away on holiday, you can check in on your home to make sure everything’s in order.

2. Help deter criminal activity

Security cameras can act as a deterrent to burglars and other criminals. Knowing that they are being watched and recorded can make them think twice before attempting to break into or vandalise your property.

Most smart security cameras will also send an alarm to your smartphone to alert you of any unexpected activity, so you can alert the police. If you're a victim of a burglary, your installed camera or cameras could record the incident and aid the police with capturing the criminal.

3. Allow you to check in with loved ones

Security cameras aren't limited to just protecting your home and valuables. These devices can be used to check in or communicate with family members when you aren't there.

For example, many smart doorbells allow 2-way communication and alert you when there’s motion on your doorstep. You’ll be able to say hello to loved ones and see when they arrive home safely. Security cameras also allow you to keep a close eye on your pets.

4. Support with medical assistance

For those loved ones with medical conditions or of an older age, a home security camera can help you assess whether everything is okay. For example, a security camera can be helpful if you have an ageing parent who lives alone but is susceptible to falls and you're not able to get through to them on the phone.

5. Provide evidence for insurance claims

If you're a homeowner, having home insurance can protect you if something goes wrong. A camera should provide your insurance company with proof – if an event, such as a burglary or accident – is to occur.
